Revolution Notebook: Andrew Farrell Re-Signs With The Team Making Plan At Centerback Cloudier
What’s the plan at center back for the New England Revolution? For those who had long-time center back Andrew Farrell departing you have guessed wrong. On Friday the club announced that they have signed the ten-year MLS veteran to a one-year contract extension for 2023 using Targeted Allocation Money and added two additional years on the back end as option years for 2023 and 2025. The last time the Revolution last re-signed Farrell was in 2020.
The 30-year-old is New England’s all-time leader in games played and minutes played and has only missed fit matches in his career.
Did other teams force Bruce Arena’s hand? Tommy Quinlan of WPRO reported that there were multiple teams looking to acquire Farrell via a trade which resulted in the club finalizing an extension to keep Farrell with the club beyond the 2023 season.
“Andrew Farrell is an important player in our team and has represented the Revolution with the utmost class throughout his decade with the club,” Revolution Sporting Director and Head Coach Bruce Arena said. “Andrew’s durability on the field and leadership in the locker room will continue to benefit our team. We are happy to reward Andrew with this new contract.”
A few weeks ago the club acquired defender Dave Romney via a trade with Nashville SC and with Romney being a starting caliber centerback it appears the Revs have a surplus of starting center backs. Either Henry Kessler is on the way out or the club plans on playing three wide at center back in more of a 3-4-3 formation.
New England will continue training in Foxborough until they depart for Florida on January 29th where they will play a total of five preseason matches.
