Boston Red Sox Release Troubled Pitcher Steven Wright
The Boston Red Sox despite not having an official General Manager are still making baseball decisions. On Friday the organization announced that they have released pitcher Steven Wright. Wright, 35-years-old, was set to make $1.5 million this year in salary arbitration.
Wright was acquired by Boston in a trade-in 2012 that sent first basemen Lars Anderson to the Cleveland Indians. During his time with the Red Sox, the knuckleballer appeared in 81 Major League games posting a 3.86 ERA with a 24-16 record and 347.2 innings pitched. By far his most successful year in the organization came in 2016. That year Wright posted a 13-6 record in 24 starts posting a 3.33 ERA. He also threw four complete games and earned his only All-Star appearance that season.

Wright's stint in Boston derailed over the past year. He was suspended by Major League Baseball for violating the league's domestic violence and performance-enhancing drug policy. That is in addition to a number of health problems.
In the 2019 season, Wright appeared in just six games for Boston. He spent much of the year dealing with a foot injury in addition to a suspension.
